NPC Vice-Chairman Greets Environmentalists

Zou Jiahua, a vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), recently sent a message to comfort a group of reporters from central and local media to cover environmental issues in the Yangtze River Basin, who are now traveling in the Three Gorges where the mammoth dam project is being built.

Zou also urged that some local officials who failed to stop pollution must be punished according to law, in response to a series of reports by these journalists who exposed some illegal activities that were detrimental to the local environment.

The reporters also received warm welcome in where they go. Local governments and firms did not hesitate to show them around the spots where environmental problems may exist.

The reporters are organized by the NPC Environmental and Resources Committee and have conducted major environmental study tours every year over the past nine years.
