Students Praised for Reading Books Carrying Patriotic Themes

Nearly 1,000 Chinese students from primary and secondary schools were put on the honor roll for reading books that carry patriotic themes Friday.

These students, coming from 12 provinces and autonomous regions, were selected from the 34.5 million involved in the annual reading campaign for Chinese youngsters. The event was organized by the All-China Women's Federation.

Vice Premier Li Lanqing said in an instruction to the organizer that patriotism is a banner of solidarity and the unremitting endeavors of the Chinese people, and to teach youngsters across China to be patriotic is an effective way of improving the moral standards of the younger generation.

The vice premier expressed the hope that the campaign will correlate with the students' education by their schools, families and society, so that they will learn patriotism, collectivism and socialism, set up the right value systems and proper views towards the world and their own lives and grow into a new generation with lofty ideals, high moral standards, good education and discipline.

This year's reading campaign, the eighth since 1993, included lectures, oral competitions, writing contests and visits to places of historic interest.

The reading campaign has involved some 290 million students from 20-odd provinces and autonomous regions across China during the past eight years.
