Taiwan Merchants Strive for Business Chances in the Olympic Games

Taiwan media think that Beijing's victory in the 2008 Olympic Games bid will rouse Taiwan merchants to have another investment upsurge in the mainland. Now many Taiwan businessmen are "rubbing their fists and palms" to strive for this lump of commercial opportunities.

Recently, Taiwan media inked a lot in reporting the impact about Beijing's victory in the Olympic bid. For instance: "Great commercial chances brought by Beijing's winning Olympic bid, it's a big cake for world enterprises", "Taiwan businessmen share the commercial chances worth of US$70b", "Mainland business chances in the Olympics to benefit Taiwan's sci-tech merchants", and "Business chances in Olympics lash at the policy of No haste, Be patient", etc.

As "China Times" reported that enterprises of Taiwan's real estate, building industry, physical exercise equipment, general merchandise, foodstuff, advertisement and network have vied with one another to "seize Beijing's market". Hongxi Enterprise has planned to take its part in the construction of Beijing gymnasiums; Pacific Construction Group will cooperate with PCCW-HKT and set up its PCCW Store of the Pacific in Beijing in the second half of this year. Taiwan Walsin Lihwa Corp., a company dealing with electrical wiring and cable which has set up its factories in the mainland expressed that its income is expected to increase by over 1 billion yuan of new Taiwan currency in the coming seven years. Juda Group and Merida Industry Co., Ltd., the investors in the mainland engaging in bicycle manufacture predicted that a bicycle tide would be roused in the mainland with Beijing's success in the Olympic Games bid. In short, the manufacturers are looking forward to a great commercial chance worth of 10 billion yuan.

"Taiwan Commercial Times" also said both Pou Chen International Group of Taiwan and Feng Tay Enterprise Co., Ltd., a professional chemical plant of US Nike Corporation wish to cooperate with world sneaker factories to develop new styles or materials of Olympic sneakers.

Zhou Baoyu, general manager of Evergreen Group in Beijing thought that not only the mainland, but also Taiwan and even the entire Asian-Pacific region would have the benefit from the victory won by Beijing in Olympic Games bid. By heading a mission to the mainland for an investigation said Li Dongliang, commissioner of "China Olympic Games Committee of Taipei" and director of Taipei Imports and Exports Consortium he will try his best to "get an extended commercial chances brought about by the Olympic Games through favorable interaction and exchanges in sports, economic and trade across the Straits".

According to the analysis of "China Times", in the coming seven years there will be so many opportunities in the construction of mainland's most advanced industries: network, environmental protection and hardware. In view of enterprises operation, it's the rule "first come first served". It can be easily understood that how anxious the Taiwan merchants are when watching the foreign businessmen jostle in crowd to the mainland while they themselves can only stand by with arms crossed due to the restrictions of the policy "No haste, Be patient" practiced by the Taiwan authorities

The six largest commercial groups of Taiwan recently once again requested the authorities to give up the policy of "No haste, Be patient" so as to let Taiwan businessmen invest and establish enterprises in China's mainland.
