Tibetology Forum to Open in Beijing

The "2001 Beijing Tibetology Forum " will be held here from July 25 to 28, attended by more than 170 Tibetologists of different ethnic backgrounds from China and more than a dozen other countries.

Tibetologists will, at the meeting, hold discussions and exchange views on research results in the fields of social and economic development, history, religion, culture, language, and Tibetan medicine.

The forum is expected to expand the influence of the unique Tibet culture, promote rapid economic development in Tibet, and improve the material and cultural lives of the Tibetan people, organizers said.

At the forum, there will be an exhibition of new books on Tibetology and lectures on Tibetan medicine. Experts and scholars will also visit an exhibition on cultural relics of Tibetan Buddhism in the Palace Museum of Beijing.

Some of the foreign Tibetologists will also visit the Tibet Autonomous Region afterwards.

The meeting is to be held at a time when China is vigorously developing its western areas, and Tibetan people are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet.

It will be the third meeting of worldwide Tibetologists in Beijing, after their previous two meetings in 1991 and 1997 respectively.

The forum will be co-sponsored by the China Tibetology Research Center and the Tibet Academy of Social Sciences.

According to statistics, China now has over 50 Tibetology institutions at different levels, with more than 2,000 researchers.
