Chinese President Meets Moldovian Counterpart on Closer Ties

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Friday in Chisinau that China is heartfeltly thankful of Moldova for its consistent one-China policy.

Jiang, who is here on a state visit to Moldova, made the remarks during talks with his Moldovian counterpart Vladimir Voronin.

"Moldova always supports China's reunification cause and we are heartfeltly thankful of that," he said. "We will, as we have always had, continue to support Moldova in its efforts to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Jiang said he firmly believes that with the joint efforts of both sides, the cooperative and friendly ties between China and Moldova will grow even better in the new century.

The two leaders expressed wish to expand trade and economic cooperation. Jiang said the two sides should encourage businessmen of the two countries to have more direct contacts and explore possibilities for cooperation.

For his part, Voronin said Jiang's state visit to his country is a firm support to Moldova which is at a critical juncture of development. He said Jiang's visit is of great importance to strengthening the cooperation and friendship between the two countries.

Following the talks, the two presidents signed several documents stressing further cooperation between the two countries in areas of culture and education. They also signed a joint statement.

Moldova is the third leg of Jiang's five-nation tour to Europe, which has taken him to Russia and Belarus, and will also take him to Ukraine and Malta.
