China, Moldova Sign Joint Statement

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Moldovian President Vladimir Voroni signed a joint statement Friday in Chisinau to reaffirm their willingness to broaden their cooperation in various areas.

The statement, signed after the two presidents held talks in the morning, says the two presidents exchanged views in a friendly and sincere atmosphere on bilateral relations and international issues of common concern. They reached wide-ranging consensus.

The two sides say in the statement that to keep bilateral relations grow in a continuous, pragmatic and stable way is in conformity with the actual and long-term interest of the two countries and their people. It will also help contribute to regional and world peace and development.

The statement says the two sides will develop their relations on the basis of the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, mutual non-interference into each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit and peaceful co-existence.

The Moldovian side reiterated that there is only one China in the world and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

In addition, the Moldovian side stressed it supports China's reunification cause and will never establish any official links with Taiwan, nor any official exchanges of visits.

It will not support Taiwan to join any international organizations for only sovereign states.

China reiterated that it respects the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova, supports its efforts to resolve the conflicts on the left side of the Dniester River.

The statement says that China understands and respects the choice of Moldova to join the European Union.

The two sides say they are determined to crack down on terrorism, separatism and extremism through bilateral and multi- lateral channels.

The statement says the two sides, faced with the tasks of economic restructuring, modernization and social development, are ready to exchange their experience on those issues.

The two sides will also endeavor to expand trade and economic cooperation. They will look for new ways and channels of cooperation in economy, technology, trade and investment.

The statement says the two sides are determined to work with the international community to establish a fair and rational new international political and economic order.

Jiang arrived here Thursday on his third leg of five-nation tour to Europe, which took him to Russia and Belarus and will also take him to Ukraine and Malta.
