Motives Behind Netanya Bombing Incident Undetermined: Israeli Police

The Israeli police had not determined whether a car bombing incident in the northern coastal city of Netanya Thursday afternoon is criminally motivated or an " terrorist" attack by Palestinians, an Israeli police spokesman told Xinhua.

What the police have known is that a bomb went off next to a car park at the corner of Dizengoff Street and Remez Street in Netanya, seriously wounding a man with criminal records and lightly wounding another, the spokesman, Geo Kleiman, said.

The police are still investigating the exact cause of the incident, he added.

Earlier, Israel Radio reported the incident, saying the bomb was set off by Palestinian extremists and it was apparently a " terrorist" attack. However, foreign agencies reported that the explosion was linked to local criminals.

The Netanya region has been the major target of Palestinian attacks due to its closeness to the West Bank. There have been at least four Palestinian bombing incidents since the violence between the Palestinians and Israel erupted late last September.

So far, over 600 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed in the violence.

A U.S.-brokered ceasefire between the two sides went into effect on June 13, but the situation on the ground in the past few days turned bad due to the escalation of the violations. Another bombing attack may prompt Israel to launch a massive attack against the Palestinians.
