Cornerstone Laid for Thermal Power Plant in Shanghai

The cornerstone has been laid for the second phase of the Waigaoqiao Power Plant in Shanghai, which will have two thermal generating units, each with a capacity of 900,000 kilowatts.

Huang Ju, secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Mayor Xu Kuangdi attended the groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday.

The two generating units to be installed will be the most powerful and most advanced thermal units in China, said sources with the plant.

The first unit is expected to be operational by December 2003 and the second by July 2004. They will be able to generate 12 billion kilowatt hours of electricity a year.

The project is jointly invested by the Shanghai Shenneng Co., the Shanghai Electrical Power Co. and the National Electrical Power Co.

It will cost over 10 billion yuan and is to be partly financed by a World Bank loan.

Alsthom and Siemens, both German firms, will provide the major equipment through an international bid.

Shanghai currently has a power generating capacity of 9.22 million kilowatts.
