MPR Special Session Unavoidable: Indonesian Vice PresidentIndonesian Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri renewed her statement on Wednesday that there was no other way to settle political conflict in the country, but through the special session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Antara News Agency reported."The MPR session is unavoidable," Megawati said in a meeting with leaders of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) at her office in Jakarta, as quoted by MUI chairman Umar Shihab. The special session of the country's top law-making body is scheduled to begin on August 1 with an agenda seeking President Abdurrahman Wahid's accountability over his government's performance. As the vice president, Megawati is likely to succeed Abdurrahman if he resigns or is impeached in the special session. The plan to hold the special session does not breach the Constitution, Megawati said. |
