People Affected by Dam Project Work Harder for Local DevelopmentAfter checking in a local hotel in Fengdu County, one of the 20 counties to be affected by the Three Gorges Dam Project, guests would first see an apology letter by the hotel management to explain why a two-star facility looks so shabby. No more investment is allowed for repairing the hotel as it will be submerged by the river water of Yangtze when the dam project is completed by 2009 and the hotel is to be relocated to a place, according to the letter. Those who understand the situation related to the mammoth hydropower project say that local people in the Three Gorges should make no apology for the poor conditions as they have, are, and will contribute a great deal to this project, the largest hydropower in the world. The dam project will result in the emerging of a large reservoir to affect 50,000 square kilometers, submerge 632 square kilometers of land, force two cities, 11 counties and 114 townships to move their seats, and relocate 1,599 factories and local villagers. It is hard for outsiders to imagine what a sacrifice local people in the Three Gorges area have made for the country's economic development. In the current visit in the Three Gorges Area, Xinhua reporters learned that despite all these unimaginable difficulties local people have dealt with, they are sparing no efforts to develop the local economy, to get over current difficulties and lay a sound foundation for future development. Tourism has been developing rapidly in the area and becoming the No.1 pillar industry in the Three Gorges Area which is home to numerous scenic spots including the Three Gorges, the Lesser Three Gorges, the hometown of late Liu Bocheng, one of the 10 marshals in China, and the Ghost City, where visitors would enjoy a terrific tour off temples that depict what hell and ghosts look like, hence the name. Local governments have also issued favorable policies to encourage local urbanites and farmers to develop an ecologically environmentally friendly farming. Meanwhile, local people are trying to make use of local resources to develop the local economy with as little investment as they can. To protect the quality of the river water for the sake of people living on the lower reaches areas, local people in the Three Gorges Area have closed down lots of polluting factories and forbidden any businesses to be set up that may cause pollution. Many local leaders told Xinhua that they would rather slow down local growth, than cause pollution to the river and environment. The money-tight local governments have allocated quite a sum of money for environmental protection every year, according to these officials.
