Feature: Full-dress Lhasa Awaits Grand Celebration
The plateau city of Lhasa, dressed up with colorful banners in its best season, is now awaiting the highlight of the grand celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the Tibet Autonomous Region's peaceful liberation.
The five-star national flags can be seen everywhere posted by local residents. Retiree Yixi Danba, 83, is among those joyous people. He said that when he first arrived here in the 1940s, he belonged to the crowd of beggars.
The man became the first generation of workers in Tibet after the region was liberated. "Only the Communist Party of China can unite different ethnic groups and help them realize common prosperity," said the man who claimed to have been living through the old and new societies and joined the Party at the age of 78.
Dawa, a Lhasa resident, expressed his excitement over more newly trimmed roads. "Thanks to the strong support from the central government and other provinces, our capital has taken on a newer and better look."
Business conscious enterprises have joined the celebration, starting from this May, to exhibit their products and promote sales. The city's busiest street, Yutuo Road, will be the location for a fair for local commodities and more than 300 companies have come to compete at the fair.
Meanwhile, various shows including singing, dancing and symphonies are scheduled to be put on. Over 3,000 farmers and herdsmen from across Tibet are ready to show off their ethnic costumes in a fashion show.
When night falls, the Potala Palace Square in the center of the religious city attracts even more tourists as well as local residents with neon lights on and flowers in full blossom.
