Poll Finds Reading Unpopular in Urban TaiwanNearly 40 percent of residents in the three largest cities in Taiwan have not read a book in the past month, according to reports reaching here from Taipei Tuesday.A survey of 1,750 adult residents in Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung, conducted by local publishing firm Net and Book in early July, found that 37.7 percent of the respondents had not read even a single book over the past month. The survey also found that reading habits decline with age. While 80 percent of the respondents in their 20s said they have time to read, only 34.5 percent of those aged over 50 said they are regular book or magazine readers. According to the survey, male readers most like books featuring computer or information technology subjects, while female readers are most interested in literary books. More than 60 percent of the respondents said they are not Internet surfers, and a mere 3.5 percent said they are regular personal digital assistant users. |
