Libyan Leader in Khartoum for State VisitLibyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi arrived in Khartoum on Tuesday for a state visit, the Sudanese television reported.Speaking to reporters upon his arrival, Qathafi stressed the need to revive the process of national reconciliation in Sudan. He said that during the recent summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Lusaka, Zambia, he discussed with African leaders ways of reviving the Egyptian-Libyan peace initiative, aimed at helping realize peace in Sudan. The joint peace initiative have been widely accepted in the region, he said, adding that he saw a new spirit and readiness in settling conflicts in southern Sudan, as well as in entire Africa. Qathafi has just ended a visit to Uganda, which is trying to improve ties with neighboring Sudan. He said that he met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni earlier in the day on the resumption of ties between Sudan and Uganda. Khartoum and Kampala have agreed to reopen embassies in each other's capital, according to the Libyan leader. Qathafi's visit to Khartoum is expected to push for the implementation of the Libyan-Egyptian initiative, which both the Sudanese government and the opposition have accepted. |
