Sri Lanka Air Force Jets Destroy Eight Tamil Rebel Boats

Sri Lankan Air Force jets destroyed eight boats of the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels off the coast of Mullaitivu in the northeast area of the country on Wednesday, a military spokesman said.

Military spokesman Sanath Karunaratne said that the navy craft deployed off Mullaitivu detected the Tamil rebel boats which are in logistic move on Wednesday morning and alerted the air force. The air force jets effectively confronted the flotilla and destroyed the rebel boats, he added.

Naval craft in the vicinity confirmed the destruction of rebel boats but exact details of the damage were not available, he said.

The LTTE rebels have been fighting against government forces since 1983 in the north and east of the country for an independent Tamil homeland. The bloody war has killed more than 64,000 people.
