Chinese President Leaves Russia for Belarus

Chinese President Jiang Zemin left Moscow Wednesday for Belarus at the end of a four-day state visit to Russia.

During his stay, Jiang and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin signed the historic Sino-Russian Treaty on Good-neighborly Friendship and Cooperation, stipulating the principles and directions for future bilateral cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, trade, science and technology, culture and international issues.

They also inked a joint statement of heads of state and discussed a broad range of issues of common concerns.

Jiang also met with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, State Duma Speaker Gennady Seleznyov, Federation Council Speaker Yegor Stroyev as well as former Russian President Boris Yeltsin.

Russia is the first leg of Jiang's five-nation European tour, which will also take him to Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and Malta.
