Hong Kong Launches Gold Jewelry Design Competition

The 2002 Chuk Kam Design Competition, a showcase of gold jewelry design and fashion trend, was launched Wednesday in Hong Kong.

Held every two years by the Hong Kong Jewelers' and Goldsmiths' Association, the 2002 Chuk Kam Design Competition will be focused on the theme of "Warmth Filling the City."

Submitted pieces will be judged on the basis of marketability of the gold jewelry items, ingenuity in the use of pure gold, design creativity, aesthetic appeal and craftsmanship.

"We underline the 'warm' aspect of gold for the 2002 competition as this salient feature of gold reflects the lifestyle and fashion trends of the 21st century," said Leung Sik Wah, chairman of the Hong Kong Jewelers' and Goldsmiths' Association, at the press conference here Wednesday.

"By giving designers this creative cue, we hope to see creations that embrace the intrinsic value of gold and establish relevance of this vital energy of gold to Hong Kong's vibrant city life," he added.

The competition is divided into seven categories which contestants can choose to enter. The first 5 categories are basic jewelry items including ring, earrings, chain, bracelet and brooch pendant. The last 2 categories are jewelry suites, namely 24-carat jewelry suite comprising at least 3 of the basic jewelry items and 18-carat jewelry suite with the same requirement.

The competition will be co-sponsored by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the World Gold Council. The application is started from now on and the results will be announced in February 2002.
