Central Government Presents Gift Tripod to TibetThe Chinese central government presented a National Unity Tripod as a gift to the Tibet Autonomous Region here Wednesday on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of the region.Vice President Hu Jintao, currently heading a central government delegation for the celebrating activities marking the anniversary, unveiled the tripod, which bears an inscription of its name by President Jiang Zemin, at the presentation ceremony. Deputy head of the delegation Wang Zhongyu, state councilor and secretary-general of the State Council, said at the ceremony that the tripod is of high historical significance in that it fully demonstrates the great importance attached by the central government to Tibet and its people. Over the past 50 years, Wang said, under the direct care of the Chinese leadership by three generations with Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin at the core respectively, people of different ethnic groups in Tibet have realized a rapid economic and social development through unity and hard work and have considerably lifted their standard of living. Wang expressed the belief that the tripod, as a symbol of national unity and prosperity, will further encourage the people of the region to rally around the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee with Jiang Zemin at the core and strive for even greater achievements. The tripod, standing five meters tall and weighing 3.5 tons, bears several relievos on its sides, reflecting major historical moments in Tibet's liberation and development.
