Cuba's Castro Meets Haitian President

Cuban President Fidel Castro met Tuesday with his Haitian counterpart, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, on ways of strengthening bilateral relations.

During their talks, the two leaders analyzed mechanisms to strengthen bilateral relations, the enhancement of bilateral cooperation as well as other regional and international issues of common interest.

The trip is "an opportunity to nurture solidarity between Cubans and Haitians and explore the possibility of further bilateral cooperation," Aristide told reporters on his arrival at the airport Monday.

Aristide, who assumed the presidency for the second time in February after controversial elections, will deliver a speech at the Main Hall of Havana University.

Cuba and Haiti resumed diplomatic relations on February 6, 1996, a day prior to the conclusion of the first tenure of Aristide.

Aristide will wind up his first official visit to Cuba on Friday.
