Kenyan President Meets Chinese Trade Delegation

Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi met in Nairobi Tuesday a Chinese trade delegation headed by Sun Zhenyu, vice minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.

Moi congratulated China on winning the bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games, saying the Chinese people are great friends of Kenyan people who also feel happy when Beijing was awarded the Olympics.

Kenya has always upheld the principle of One China since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1963, the Kenyan president said, stressing that China is a country with a huge population, and that the affairs of China should be decided by the Chinese people themselves.

He noted the great potentials lying in the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, stressing Kenya will always remain its door open for Chinese enterprises which are welcome to invest in every sector of Kenya.

Sun conveyed the greetings from Chinese President Jiang Zemin, saying that Moi is an old friend of China. He thanked Kenya for its support to China on many international issues.

The vice minister told Moi that he has brought with him quite a number of prestigious Chinese entrepreneurs, who have been engaged in business talks with their Kenyan counterparts since their arrival.

Direct cooperation among entrepreneurs is bound to further promote economic and trade exchanges between the two countries, Sun said.

On Monday, Sun and Kenyan Finance Minister Chris Okemo signed an agreement canceling about 13.6 million U.S. dollars, or 55 percent of Kenya's total debt owed to China.

Meanwhile, the two also signed two agreements, one on economic and technical cooperation and the other on promotion and protection of investment between the two countries.

The Chinese trade delegation arrived here on Friday for a five- day visit to the east African country.
