Tung Outlines HK's Remarkable Strengths in YearbookChief Executive Tung Chee Hwa highlighted the remarkable attributes that provide a firm base to position Hong Kong as a world city in the latest edition of the Government yearbook released Tuesday.Noting that recent research had shown Hong Kong to be innovative, up-to-date, dynamic, intelligent, energetic, prestigious and distinctive, Tung said Hong Kong's aspiration was to be in the league of "world cities" like New York and London. "A 'world city' must have a strong internationally-oriented business sector and, in particular, vibrant service industries with access to a workforce with specialized skills and knowledge," Tung noted in the Review Chapter of Hong Kong 2000. "These characteristics, combined with a vibrant economy, a free society based on the rule of law, a position as an international center of finance, trade and tourism, excellent transportation and telecommunication infrastructure, and a large international community, are all trademarks of these world cities," he said. Tung said that Hong Kong not only possessed all of these attributes but was committed to maintaining and strengthening them. |
