Central Delegation Attends Tibet CelebrationA delegation of the central government headed by Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao left Beijing Tuesday morning for Lhasa to attend the celebration marking the 50th anniversary of Tibet's peaceful liberation.The central government of China signed a 17-article agreement with the local government of Tibet on May 23, 1951. Then, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) stationed in Lhasa in October the same year. As an integral part of China, Tibet carried out democratic reforms in 1959, which turned serfs, accounting for 95 percent of the total population in Tibet, into masters of their own destiny. The 50-member delegation includes Pagbalha Geleg Namgyai, vice- chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Wang Zhongyu, State Councilor, Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Ngapoi Nagwang Jigme, vice chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC. |
