Xinhua President Meets Egyptian Information Minister

Tian Congming, president of China's state-run Xinhua News Agency, Monday met with Egyptian Information Minister Safwat Yousuf el-Sharif in Cairo.

The two sides held cordial and friendly talks on developing bilateral cultural and journalistic cooperation.

Tian said that Xinhua has maintained traditional cooperative ties with Egypt's official Middle East News Agency (MENA), praising the mutual support between the two news organizations.

Earlier in the day, Tian and Mahfouz el-Ansari, MENA's board chairman and chief editor, inked an agreement on media cooperation at the headquarters of MENA.

Tian said that the accord signaled a further step towards cooperation between the two news agencies, adding that "our two countries have common standpoints on many new issues of mutual concern ... We should keep frequent contacts in order to solve all these issues."

Extending warm welcome to the Chinese delegation led by Tian, Sharif said that Chinese culture has yet to be available to ordinary Egyptians. "I hope that media cooperation will help Egyptians to understand more about China," Sharif said.

The minister said that Egypt and China have "deep historic and cultural relations," adding that bilateral ties between the two countries have never been blemished throughout history.

He also expressed hope that the Chinese delegation's visit would offer a chance to open new and wider prospect of cooperation between the two countries in the field of media.

Tian arrived here early Monday morning on a four-day visit to Egypt at MENA's invitation, during which he will meet with senior Egyptian officials.

Xinhua, founded in 1931, has thus far set up offices in more than 100 countries and established a global communications network. It has cooperative ties with a large number of foreign media organizations.
