China to Hold National Exam for Entry to Legal Profession

To comply with the amendments to the judge's law and the procurator's law just approved by the legislature, China will, starting from 2002, hold national judiciary examination for people who want to enter the legal professions of judge, prosecutor and lawyer.

According to an announcement issued jointly by the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate and the Ministry of Justice, the examination will be held in early 2002 for the first time.

Such a move is expected to improve the caliber of the nation's legal profession and better ensure justice, a senior legislator said.

Most countries in the world have already had similar system, and a nationwide bar examination system has been in place for more than ten years.

The unitary test system will have a far-reaching influence, the lawmaker said, explaining that it can help to improve the knowledge and working quality of judges, procurators, and legal counsels.

Through the new system, more qualified people from all walks of life will be recruited rather than merely from inside of the judiciary, he said.
