Despite the largest flooding in the past 50 years, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region still reported an improving economy in the first half of the year, according to an official of the regional bureau of statistics Monday.

The region realized a GDP of 7.692 billion yuan (927 million U. S. dollars), 8.8 percent higher than the same period last year, which the official said is "the fastest velocity since 1998."

Large-scale manufacturers, including those state-owned, reported good operation with a leaping return. Big profit-makers are industries like sugar, power, non-ferrous metals, automobiles, pharmacy and chemicals, which "have shown their potential prospect. "
