Feature Agriculture to Enrich Xinjiang Farmers

June is the right season for Keshen to harvest the yellow apricot, unlike previous years, this year fresh apricot has been selling at a good price. The automatic apricot juice processing facilities with a daily production capacity of 350 tons of juice, and set up by Xinjiang Tunhe Co. Ltd.in Shule County, has begun to process concentrated apricot juice, thus providing local farmers with a way out to sell their 8,000 tons of apricots.

According to initial estimate, after the production line is put into operation this year, it will help raise the per-capita income of farmers in Keshen by about 100 yuan in the same year.

The impetus given by lead enterprises has expedited readjustment of southern Xinjiang's industrial structure, developing the feature economy has become the common aspiration and action of local farmers and cadres. According to the plan of Keshen Prefecture, each farmer will have 1 mu (15 mu = one hectare) of fruit land by 2003.

When carrot is still growing in the fields in Jimusar County, northern Xinjiang, it has become the rage at the market. Orders have been placed for all the carrots planted by a local farmer in Dayou Village, after the carrot is purchased in late September, the farmer can earn as much as 10,000 yuan.

By taking advantage of the richly bestowed natural resources, the northern mountain area of Tianshan Mountain is confirmed as one of the most suitable places for planting carrots. A carrot juice production line with a daily processing capacity of 360 tons of carrots was put into operation last year, it becomes China's largest and technically most advanced carrot juice production base. By developing such industry, each farmer in the county can earn 1,000 yuan more.

In the Hami region which lies in the east part of Tianshan mountain, the income earned from feature agricultural products such as Hami melon, jujube, grape and vegetable has increased to 40 percent from 16 percent several years ago. Last year, the Hami melon planting area reached 45,000 mu with the total output volume hitting 60,000 tons, 55,000 tons of which have been sold to other provinces.

Xinjiang's grape, Hami melon, pear, apple and other fruit are known far and near, they have a very promising market prospect.

Xinjiang, known as China's "Land of Fruit", is building 26 main economic fruit bases. By 2005, the area of fruit plantations will make up 12 percent of the total arable land, fruit industry will become an important economic growth point driving the development of Xinjiang's rural economy and raising farmers' income.
