Centenarian Sago Cycass Turns into Blossom

A 110-year-old sago cycass recently began to blossom in Beihai, in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The tree is two meters high and 40 centimeters in diameter. It was planted by Tan Hongshun, who died at the age of 83 in 1960.

The tree is flourishing and its yellow flowers gives off a delicate fragrance.

There had been over 10 small trees germinating around the old tree in 1980s and some had been transplanted to other places, said Tan Weiyu, the great-grandson of Tan Hongshun. There are still three small trees left, all over one meter high.

Some companies and individuals have proposed to buy the tree at a price of 10,000 yuan (1,200 US dollars) or more, which was rejected by Tan and his family members who regarded the tree as one of their family members, Tan added.
