Earthquake Jolts Southwest China

- An earthquake measured 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Jiangchuan County in southwest China's Yunnan Province at 2:36 Sunday morning, according to local seismological bureau.

The epicenter was located at 24.20 degrees north latitude and 102.38 degrees east longitude.

No casualties have been reported by press time.

Xie Xingrong, head of the county, said that almost all residents rushed out of their homes when they felt the tremor.

Jiangchuan is located in the southern part of Yunnan Province which borders Myanma, Laos and Viet Nam. The county is about 100 kilometers from Kunming, the capital of the province.

The provincial seismological bureau has sent a panel of experts to the quake-hit area.
