Two dead, One Missing in US Chemical fire

Two people were killed, one was missing and at least nine were injured as a chemical factory exploded on July 14 in Michigan of the United States.

Hundreds of homes near the factory were evacuated following the explosion at the ATOFINA Chemicals Inc plant.

A railcar containing a dangerous chemical exploded about 4:30 a. m. local time at the factory. The fire was under control by noon.

"This is the worst thing I can remember in the plant's history, " said company engineer Ron Potier. "We've always prided ourselves on plant safety."

ATOFINA, headquartered in Philadelphia, has 4,000 employees in 20 plants in North America and 16 others worldwide.

The Riverview plant in Michigan is the company's oldest, opened in 1898. It has 212 workers, according to company spokeswoman Connie Wickersham.

The fire made Canadian authorities close a portion of the Detroit River to boaters until further notice.
