Japanese Calculator Maker to Apologize to Chinese Customers

Famous Japanese calculator maker the Casio Corporation will apologize to Chinese users for its defective calculators, according to an agreement reached Hangzhou on July 13 afternoon.

The Japanese company also agreed to replace the defective calculators, under the agreement between Casio and the consumers' association of Zhejiang Province, east China.

A written apology and detailed replacement package are due to be released before July 27 to China's nationwide media and the media in Zhejiang, where two teachers, also Casio calculator users, took the initiative of filing a lawsuit against the company for reimbursement and compensation.

Chinese consumers who bought calculators between January 1, 1996 and May 18 this year are entitled to replace the defective products with new ones, according to the agreement.

According to local sources, there is still difference between the Japanese company and the two teachers over the amount of compensation they have asked for. Further negotiations will be held to settle the problem.
