Overseas Chinese Congratulate Beijing on Successful Olympic Games Bid

Overseas Chinese congratulated Beijing on its success in winning the right to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games Friday.

Lin Zhaoshu, chairman of All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, said he had received a large number of phone calls from overseas Chinese expressing their heartfelt congratulations.

Li Yunxiang, president of the Canada-China Chamber of Commerce, said he is very happy about Beijing's success.

His chamber and the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese collected 810,000 signatures from overseas Chinese, voicing their support for Beijing's bid, which were handed over to the International Olympic Committee.

Qiu Weikang, an Australian Chinese and president of the Australia-China Society for the Peaceful Reunification of China, offered his congratulations in a phone call from Taipei.

Lin quoted Qiu as saying he is very proud of being a Chinese and excited over Beijing's victory.

According to Lin, many Taiwan compatriots are also excited and happy about Beijing's success and wished the 2008 Summer Olympic Games a success.
