Efforts Urged to Foster Beijing Opera

Senior Chinese leader Li Ruihuan Friday urged the country's cultural departments and Beijing Opera performers to work hard to complete the task of recording outstanding Beijing Opera plays performed by the best living performers.

Li, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, said recording both the images and sounds of the selected plays, mostly the best known and representative, will be of great help to inheriting and fostering the valuable cultural wealth of Beijing Opera.

Li, also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, told a meeting that there are about 70 dramatic plays of Beijing Opera to be recorded, and more efforts should be made to quicken the pace of the remaining work.
