Chinese Paralyzed Gymnast Sang Aims Gold at 2008 Beijing Paralympics

Chinese paralyzed gymnast Sang Lan vowed to win gold medals again. This time, Sang hoped to win the Olympic champion at 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.

"I will return to competition in 2008. A gold medal in Beijing Olympics is all I want," Sang said here with the Beijing bid delegation on Saturday.

Sang broke her neck in the warm-up for the women's vault competition at the New York Goodwill Games in 1998 and was predicted that she would probably be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

"To get on your feet again as you fall down is what I believe in, and this is just common for us gymnasts,"said the youngest Goodwill Ambassador for Beijing's 2008 Olympic bid delegation.

"If everything goes well, I might have the chance to practice table tennis. I want to take part in the table tennis competition in the Beijing Paralympics, and I have seven years to go."

Sitting in a wheelchair, Sang feels nothing from mid-chest down but passion about Olympics.

"I will never give up. I just want a gold medal for my struggling to live on. I want to better myself, and to be a strong- willed person," said the 20-year-old.

Sang, representative of Chinese athletes and Goodwill Ambassador for Beijing's bid, played her role well in the Beijing bid cmmittee's presentation to the IOC evaluation team last February.

She said: "I can't move around as freely as I want to, but I can feel the heat of Olympics. I tell every one that please vote for Beijing because I know how eager the Beijing people are longing for to host an Olympics."
