Chinese-American Guilty of Espionage, Deported

Li Shaomin, an American citizen by Chinese origin, was found guilty of espionage and was ordered to be deported Saturday.

The ruling was made by the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court in a trial held here Saturday morning.

On February 26 this year, Li was under supervision for his suspected spy offenses. He was detained on May 15.

Large number of evidences produced at the court show that Li accepted tasks from a Taiwan spy organization and collected information for it, which harmed state security of China.

The court made the ruling according to law, said sources from the court.

During Li's detainment, China's relevant departments, in accordance with agreements reached between China and the United States, informed the US Embassy to China of Li's case and arranged for visits on Li.

An official from the US Embassy to China sat in Saturday's trial and a lawyer appointed by Li also defended for him.
