Chinese in Britain Celebrate Beijing's Olympic Bid Success

Chinese ambassador to Britain Ma Zhengang said Friday in London that he believes Beijing will host the greatest Olympic Games in history.

Over 100 British Chinese, representatives of Chinese students in Britain gathered at the Chinese embassy witnessing before TV screens Beijing has won the right to stage the 2008 Olympic Games.

"The victory should be attributed to all the 1.3 billion Chinese people and all the Chinese living in every corner of the world."

"It's not an easy win," Ma said in tears. "Early this century, Chinese were called 'Sick Men in East Asia.' Bejing's win proved that China has achieved a great success in sports, economy and other fields.

"Chinese people account for one fifth of the world's population; they deserve the Olympics. I believe the Olympic spirit will be carried forward by the Chinese people; I also believe Beijing Olympic Games will be the most successful one in history."

Heng Ko Lei, President of Chinese Professionals in Britain, was choked: "I cannot find words to express my feelings now. I hope every Chinese in the world will remember this moment. This is the unforgettable time for me."

Yang Menyun, 86, who has lived most of his life in Britain, said: "I will be over 90 years old in 2008, but I will be sure to watch Beijing Olympic Games if I am still alive by then."
