Shoddy Truck Assemblers Convicted in E. ChinaThirteen people were on Thursday given various sentences ranging up to life imprisonment by a local court for illegally assembling trucks with scrapped parts and selling them for profits in Shishi in east China's Fujian Province.Liu Yongsheng assembled 44 trucks by using discarded truck parts between 1995 and 2000, selling 15 of the trucks for 4.73 million yuan (570,000 US dollars). During the same period, Liu Hanshui and Liu Yili assembled 43 trucks, selling 14 of them for 4. 66 million yuan (561,000 US dollars), according to the court. The three people were sentenced to life imprisonment, and fined 5 million yuan (602,000 US dollars). The rest of the people assembled various numbers of trucks and were given jail terms varying from two years to 17 years. Several officials in charge of registration of new vehicles were bribed to issue certificates to allow the assembled trucks to be able to run on roads, and they were convicted of bribery and dereliction of duty and condemned to jail terms ranging from two years to 8 years, according to the court. |
