China's Top Lawmaker Meets Venezuelan Judge
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, met Thursday with Ivan Rincon Urdaneta, president of the Supreme Court of Venezuela.

Briefing Rincon on China's judicial system, Li said China attaches great importance to building the legal system. The framework of a socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics has initially taken shape and will be eventually completed by the year 2010, he added.

Li stressed that legal circles of China and Venezuela have a lot of aspects to exchange and borrow from each other, though the two countries' state conditions and legal systems are quite different.

The visit of Rincon will further the exchange and cooperation between the two countries' legal circles, and will make contribution to the development of Sino-Venezuelan relations, Li said.

The bilateral ties were enhanced by Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Venezuela in April and a reciprocal visit by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias to China in May.

Rincon said his current visit is meant to have a better understanding of China's legal system, and he will work on the cooperative agreements he reached with Xiao Yang, president of the Supreme People's Court of China.

Rincon is here at the invitation of the Supreme People's Court of China.
