Tung Congratulates Beijing's Successful Bid for Olympics

Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa Friday extended congratulation on the successful bid by Beijing to host the 2008 Olympics.

"Today, 1.2 billion Chinese people have realized their dream and Beijing has won the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games," said Tung, who was at present on his journey in the United States. "This is a proud and exciting moment for our people," he said.

Tung said that he was particularly moved, because the successful development of the country in recent years has been made possible through the crossing of many hurdles and efforts made on the part of many people.

"Ever since the submission of the previous bid to host the Olympics, we have witnessed rapid and momentous developments in Beijing and the whole country, the quality of life of the people is rising, and the collective effort throughout the country to strive for excellence fully reflects the Olympic spirit," the Chief Executive said.

He said that Beijing's success in bidding for the Olympics will provide Hong Kong athletes with the opportunity to compete in the most prestigious sports event in the world on the native soil. "We will certainly apply ourselves fully in the pursuit of excellence, " he said.

"On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I wish to extend warm congratulations to our compatriots, in particular to the citizens of Beijing," Tung said. "It is our earnest hope that the 2008 Olympics will turn out to be the best Olympic Games ever to be held."
