Torrential Rains Still Ravaging NW China ProvinceDays of torrential rain which hit northwest China's Qinghai Province have caused heavy damage and financial loss in the provincial capital and a few major agricultural and pastoral areas.Hundreds of thousands of military troops and local residents have been mobilized for the disaster-relief work. The storms have caused numerous mountain torrents and mud-rock flows, and resulted in power outages and transportation blocks. The Provincial Meteorological Bureau forecast that some places in the province will continue to see hail and heavy rains for the next few days. The heaviest rainfall in the province reached 50.7 mm in half an hour, an amount rare in the area. The Provincial Civil Affairs Department has given 5 million yuan-worth of grain to aid people in the disaster-hit region. |
