Shanghai Receives 300 Million Domestic Tourist ArrivalsStatistics from the local tourism administration show that nearly 300 million domestic tourists visited Shanghai, China's economic giant, between 1997 and 2000.Arrivals at Pudong, the newly developed zone in Shanghai, were 25.39 million. Officials with the administration predict an annual tourist rise of 5 percent for Shanghai and 20 to 30 percent for the Pudong area. Sources with the administration said that half of the arrivals came here for sightseeing, one fifth of them came for exhibitions and the rest came for entertainment. The most frequent sites visited were the Bund, Nanjing Road, Lujiazui in Pudong, the People's Square, the Shanghai Museum and the Shanghai Theater. Less than half of the tourists came to Shanghai by train and 12 percent came by plane. More people are expected to fly to Shanghai in the future. |
