Fiji Opens Embassy in China

The Embassy of the Republic of Fiji to China was opened here Wednesday, and an opening ceremony was held, chaired by Kaliopate Tavola, minister for foreign affairs, external trade and sugar of the south Pacific nation.

Tavola, who is on a three-day visit to China, said Fiji remains steadfast on the one-China policy as enunciated in a joint communique between Fiji and China issued on November 5, 1975.

He also thanked China for its economic and technological assistance, attributing it to the rapid economic development in Fiji. With the great achievements in trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, the prospects of bilateral relations are optimistic.

Zhou Wenzhong, assistant foreign minister, said the relations between China and Fiji have progressed smoothly since the establishment of their diplomatic relations 26 years ago. Fiji has become China's second largest trade partner in south Pacific island countries.

He said the opening of Fiji's embassy in Beijing will usher in a new era for the development of bilateral ties.
