SLOC Chairman Calls for an Equal Chance for BeijingMitt Romney, chairman of Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games (SLOC) Wednesday said that Beijing possesses all necessary conditions for holding a successful Olympic Games and has its own technical advantages. He appealed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should give China an equal chance of fair competition instead of being controlled by some persons who are critical to China's human rights situation. To give Beijing a chance will further promote China's opening and better maintain the peaceful co-existence between the big powers in the world.Romney said so when he finished a regular sport to the IOC on Wednesday. He also pointed out at a news briefing later "the Olympic spirit aims at building up a bridge for communications instead of setting up manmade barriersĄwe should not build walls to obstruct its exchanges with other countries even though we may disagree some of its performances." He also pointed out, "the IOC should conduct an overall investigation on Beijing's bid. We should see its advantages just as what we have done to other candidate cities". According to the working schedule of the IOC, all of its officials will vote by ballot on Friday in Moscow to select a host city for the 2008 Olympic Games. Beijing is at present considered to be in a favorable position. By PD Online Staff Du Minghua
