Chinese Scientist Reelected Chairman of UNIOC

July 10 saw Su Jilan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and honorary chairman of the Second Institute of Oceanography of the State Oceanic Administration reelected chairman of the United Nation's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNIOC) at its 21st UNIOC Meeting.

Held in Paris by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), it is the first time for a Chinese scientist to be reelected president of an important unit of the UNESCO.

Since the 1980s, Su Jilan, a famous oceanographic physicist in China has for many years concentrated and made great achievements on oceanographic studies of river estuaries, gulfs and continental shelves. He was elected vice chairman of the UNIOC in February 1993 and then chairman in June 1999.
