US Computer Company to Boost Investment in China

Seeking long-term interests and common development in China, Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) will build joint ventures with solid investment to help develop local information technology (IT) industry, the chief of the company said Wednesday.

Charles Wang, chairman of the board of CA, told Xinhua in an interview that the company sees great opportunities in China.

"China is a huge market for us, it is our fastest growing geographic segment today," he said, adding that the technical talent of the Chinese people is "incredible."

"But China has a danger following India into a tragic trend to become a low-cost 'people provider' for foreign IT companies," the chairman warned.

"We have taken a totally different tactics," he noted. "We will invest in helping build local IT industry so that we can see the industry grow."

Hoping to see a "win-win" situation and longer-term interests from which CA can benefit, he said: "we have basically done a lot of joint ventures there to help grow local IT industry, obviously based on CA's infrastructure technology. With that we feel the local IT industry will grow quicker, in that way CA's presence and CA's success will be quicker also."

CA currently has six joint ventures in China's mainland, providing localized anti-virus software, e-Business applications, telecommunication management and a full range of Internet Application Services Provider software.

CA said in a press release here that its e-Business solution can be grouped into Process Management, Information Management and Infrastructure Management, with strategic focuses on Enterprise Management, Security, Storage, e-Business Transformation and Integration, Portal and Knowledge Management, as well as Predictive Analysis and Visualization.

According to CA, the third largest software company after Microsoft and Oracle, its e-Business solution is being adopted by up to 99 percent of the Fortune-500.

Founded in 1976, CA now has a total of 18,000 employees earning a revenue of over 6 billion US dollars, according to the International Data Corporation.
