CASS Trains 5,000 Ph.D.s and M.A.s

With 309 new graduates receiving doctorate or master's degrees from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) this spring, the academy has produced nearly 5,000 Ph.Ds and M.A.s in the past 23 years.

Li Tieying, CASS president, attended the graduation ceremony and awarded diplomas to the graduates.

Among the recipients were overseas students from Canada, the Republic of Korea, Vietnam and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The CASS graduate school also commended students who had made outstanding academic achievements.

As China's top research organ of social sciences, the CASS has six divisions -- philosophy, economics, law, literature, history and international issues -- and 38 departments.

The school has more than 400 Ph.D. advisors and 600 M.A. advisors.

CASS originated from the philosophy and social sciences section of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1977, and established the graduate school the following year.
