China to Boost Friendly, Cooperative Ties with Fiji

China is willing to make concerted efforts with Fiji, on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence, to further their friendly and cooperative ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Tuesday.

Tang made this remark while talking with Kaliopate Tavola, Fijian minister for foreign affairs, external trade and sugar. They exchanged views and reached broad consensus on bilateral relations, and regional and international issues of common concern.

Since the two nations forged diplomatic relations 26 years ago, their bilateral ties have made progress in many areas, and exchanges and cooperation in political, economic, trade and cultural fields, as well as between the two parliaments, have been very successful, Tang said.

As developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, China and Fiji are complementary in their economies, and both follow a diplomatic policy of peace. The consolidation and development of the bilateral ties will benefit not only their peoples, but also the prosperity and development of the Asia-Pacific region, Tang added.

Tavola said Fiji attaches great importance to its relations with China, and the official opening of the Fijian embassy in China foretells new development of the friendly relations in the new century.

He said Fiji will adhere to the one-China principle, and cooperate with China to promote friendly cooperation in all areas.

Tang expounded on China's stance on the Taiwan issue, and expressed appreciation for Fiji's adherence to the one-China principle.

Tavola is here as Tang's guest for a three-day visit, during which he will host the opening ceremony of the embassy.
