China's First Expo on Reproductive Health Opens in Beijing

China's first exposition on new technology and products in the family planning and reproductive health fields opened in Beijing Wednesday, marking World Population Day.

This is the first time China has held such an event, said Zhang Weiqing, director of the State Family Planning Commission (SFPC).

The expo's aim is to show that population control depends on scientific and technological advances, and research and cooperation in the field should be encouraged. China should develop and spread new technology and products for reproductive health and open up the related industries, according to Zhang.

Zhang said that in the next 10 years, it will be important for China to offer basic reproductive health care to people.

He mentioned that China will make joint efforts with other countries to seek ways to control population growth and promote sustainable development.

In addition to traditional contraceptives, new technologies and products for treatment of sterility, sexual hygiene, diagnosis and prevention of congenital ailments, prevention of AIDS and other venereal diseases are also included in the expo.

Zhang said the expo demonstrates that the country's family planning focus has turned more toward reproductive health than just population control and is beginning to pay more attention to people's individual needs.

Nearly 300 domestic and overseas research institutes, enterprises and international organizations are attending the expo. Lectures and symposiums will be included in the four-day event.

"China Population Network," sponsored by SFPC, opened Wednesday and featured a live broadcast about the expo.
