Sri Lankan Police Seize Massive Cache of Tamil Rebel WeaponsThe Manipay police of the Jaffna police division in the north of Sri Lanka have seized a massive cache of high powered sophisticated weapons worth 15 million rupees (around 166,000 US dollars) belonging to separatist Tamil Tiger rebels hidden in a concrete bunker. The official Daily News said on Tuesday that some of the weapons bore the Indian army crest and were likely captured from the Indian army when the Indian Peace Keeping force was in Sri Lanka up to 1989. An 84 mm rocket grenade launcher found in the bunker is not in the armory of the armed forces. It is mainly used to destroy battle tanks. The policemen who captured the weapons were rewarded with cash and promotions. The informant was rewarded with 300,000 rupees (around 3,000 US dollars). The Inspector General of police Lucky Kodituwakku highly commended the police team responsible for the detection of the arms. Police said that this is the second largest detection of arms by them. The first one was by government forces during a military operation in 1995. |
