Hangzhou Builds College Complex to Boost Growth

Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone is taking measures to consolidate a better foundation for its long term development.

Located in the northern part of the zone, the Zhejiang Higher Education and Scientific Research Town plans to host 15 universities and colleges, with a total enrollment of some 120,000 students when it is completed by the end of 2005.

Covering a land area of more than 10 square kilometres, it will be the biggest educational base with the most advanced equipment and facilities in Zhejiang Province.

The first phase of the project is to be finished before the coming summer semester.

Six universities and colleges, including Zhejiang Engineering College and Hangzhou Electronics Institute, will move into the town soon and get ready for the summer semester.

"We are very confident that this higher education and scientific research town will be very helpful for us to introduce high-tech projects into our zone in the long run," said Sun Yuan, deputy director of the Administrative Committee of the zone.

Situated in the southeastern part of the development zone, the Hangzhou Export Processing Zone was put into operation on May 18. So far, seven projects with investment of more than US$100 million have signed initial agreements with the zone.
