China, DPRK Vow to Strengthen Relations
China and the Democratic People' s Republic of Korea (DPRK) vowed Tuesday to further develop their relations under the spirit of their Treaty of Friendly Cooperation and Mutual Assistance signed on July 11, 1961.
The determination was expressed by Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, and Jiang Chunyun, visiting vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, when they met in Pyongyang.
Jiang, also a political bureau member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, arrived in the DPRK to attend activities marking the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty.
Kim said that the treaty not only promoted contacts and cooperation between the two countries, but also strengthened their unity and friendship and played an important role in maintaining world peace.
He said that DPRK President Kim Jong Il values relations between the two countries and that the DPRK will make continuous efforts to strengthen the relations.
Jiang said that the treaty signed by late Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and late DPRK President Kim Il Song set a legal foundation for the all-round development of the friendly relations between the two countries.
He said that DPRK President Kim Jong Il paid two successful visits to China, one in last year and another in this year. The visit of China's President Jiang Zemin to the DPRK this year will be another important event in the history between the two countries.
Jiang expressed his confidence that the relations between the two countries will further develop in the 21st century.
