Vice-President Meets APEC Youth Forum Heads of Delegations

Vice-President Meets APEC Youth Forum Heads of Delegations
Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that young people in the Asia-Pacific region should increase exchanges, learn from each other and work for the civilization, progress and prosperity of the region and the world.

Hu made the remarks during a meeting with heads of youth delegations from 21 members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), who are here to attend the APEC Youth Festival and the APEC Young Leaders/Entrepreneurs Forum, co-sponsored by China and Canada.

Hu said that China pays great attention to the role of APEC in the economic development of the region and the world. The current festival and forum, with the theme of meeting the challenges of economic globalization, reflect APEC's and its members' expectations for youth.

Young entrepreneurs are important forces in pushing forward economic growth and social development, he said. Young people of APEC members should increase exchange and learn from each other. They should also be bold enough to make innovations and work vigorously for progress in economic, social, science and technology and cultural areas of the region and the world.

Martin Cauchon, minister of National Revenue of Canada and head of the Canadian delegation, said Canada and China have had good cooperation on various international occasions and the Canadian side is glad to co-sponsor the current festival and forum with China.

He stressed that young entrepreneurs of the region meet and exchange views and this helps them to deepen their understanding and friendship, thus opening the door for cooperation.

Irina Osokina, deputy minister of Industry, Science and Technology of Russia and head of the Russian delegation, said she believes the Asia-Pacific region will see tremendous development in the new century. It is especially important for the young people of the region to gather and discuss ways and means to meet the challenges of economic globalization. She said this will help contribute to the peace, stability, development and prosperity of the region.
